ESS Graduate Degrees

The School of Environment, Society & Sustainability at the University of Utah offers unparalleled opportunities to work with faculty doing cutting edge research while enjoying Utah’s world-famous recreational opportunities! We offer three graduate degrees: the Geography Masters of Science (MS), the Masters of Science in Geographic Information Science (MSGIS), and the Geography PhD.  Utah is the perfect place to study GIS and remote sensing, urban, health, and economic geography, or Earth system science. When our students aren’t engaged in research or in the classroom, you’ll often find them running, hiking, biking, climbing, skiing, or boarding. Degree Programs

MSGIS

The MSGIS is a professional degree that allows students to specialize in Geographic Information Science. The MSGIS gives students the in-depth experience required for advanced careers in GIS.

MS

The Geography MS is a great avenue to an advanced career in Geography, or to a PhD. The Geography MS is research-focused degree that provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with faculty and with other grad students.

PhD

The PhD is the pinnacle degree in the field of Geography, and provides the advanced training required for careers in research and academia. PhD students develop a research-intensive dissertation in close collaboration with their advisor and committee.
