First Steps for Prospective Students
- Review our programs.
- Review our faculty and their research here.
- Reach out to two or more faculty members that you would be interested in working with and inquire about whether they are accepting and/or funding students. (It is suggested that you reach out at least 3 months prior to the application deadline.) Include a short description of your qualifications, research interests, and your specific alignment with that faculty member. (Be persistent!)

Please note that some faculty will work with prospective students on an NSF GRFP application. See eligibility
and application requirements here.
Campus visits or video conferences are encouraged!

ESS has a limited number of teaching assistantships & research assistanships available
each year. Domestic & international students are eligible for these assistantships.
Because funding is typically managed at the faculty level, availability varies by
advisor and is dependent on each faculty member's grants, research alignment, available
funding sources & advising capacity.

International Students
Minimum language scores for acceptance:
- Duolingo 110 or higher
- iBT/TOEFL 80/120 or higher
- iBT/TOEFL 4.5/6 or higher
- IELTS 6.5 or higher
Minimum language scores for Teaching Assistantships:
- TOEFL Speaking sub-score of 25+
- IELTS Speaking sub-score of 7.0+
- Duolingo/TOEIC/OPI test scores are not accepted for TA-ships
*Note: Test must be taken within two years of applying
If you are offered a TA-ship and do not meet the above requirements you will be required to enroll in the International Teaching Assistant Program
